- Religion, Shame, and Violence:
Unholy Alliances and Liberating Possibilities
The toxic shame related to wounds of class, misogyny, race and homophobia is thought to be the pathogenic root of the largely male violence that plagues U.S. society and the world. This talk, by John McDargh, Ph.D., explores the ways in which Western Biblical religion plays a role both as contributing to the complex of shame reactions, but also under optimal circumstances, as an invaluable resource to resist shame and violence.
Speaker: John McDargh, Ph.D., Professor in the Department of Theology at Boston College.
Discussants:
Sandra Buechler, Ph.D., Training and Supervising Analyst, William Alanson White Institute, New York.
Rabbi Shai Held, Scholar-in-residence at Kehilat Hadar, and Lecturer in Jewish Philosophy at the Jewish Theological Seminary.
Chair: Seth Aronson, Supervising Analyst, William Alanson White Institute
